Repeat Sales in an Online Store: How to Build a System

Repeat sales grow when the customer is happy with the first order and the store reminds them at the right moment: when a product runs out, a fitting new item arrives or the season changes. Below is a six-step system you can run on WooCommerce without a big CRM.

Why a repeat customer is worth more

A repeat order needs no ad spend: the customer already knows the store, trusts it and remembers where to look. So each repeat order earns more profit than the first one, especially if that first order was bought through expensive advertising.

Start by measuring your repeat rate: of the customers who made their first order in a given month, how many came back for a second one within, say, 90 or 180 days. That is the baseline you will build on.

Step 1. A first order with no disappointments

A repeat purchase starts with the first one. Accurate delivery dates, a clear order confirmation email, tidy packaging, fast support replies. If the first experience is bad, no coupon will bring the customer back.

Add a short usage guide and an "is everything OK?" line to the email you send after delivery. It catches problems before they turn into a bad review.

Step 2. A reason to return at the moment of purchase

The customer should leave the thank-you page with a reason to come back: a coupon for the next order, an invitation to the loyalty program, a subscription to new arrivals. A coupon with a clear expiry date works better than an open-ended one, because people forget the open-ended ones.

Step 3. Replenishment reminders

For consumables this is the main tool. Work out how many days customers usually take to order the same product again: coffee, pet food, cosmetics, filters. Send a reminder a few days before that point, with a link for a quick reorder.

If the product is not used up, look for another reason: the season (winter boots in autumn), care (leather protector a month later), an add-on (a case for the tablet they bought).

Step 4. Segments instead of one blast

SegmentWho they areWhat to send
NewOne order, under 30 days agoProduct care tips, a selection of add-ons
ConsumablesBought a product with a replenishment cycleReplenishment reminder
Regulars3 or more ordersEarly access, private offers
DriftingHaven't bought in a whileWhat's new, a personal coupon
LapsedHaven't bought in a long timeOne win-back email, then a pause

Step 5. A loyalty program

A simple program beats a complicated one. Points per order that can be spent on the next one, or a status after a few orders that unlocks free shipping. The customer should see the benefit in five seconds.

WooCommerce has plugins for points and tiers. Before launching, work out what the program costs in margin, and decide how you will measure its effect: compare the repeat rate of members and non-members with a similar purchase history.

Step 6. Win-back

For a customer who hasn't ordered in a while, send one or two emails with a specific reason: new items in their category, a personal discount. If they don't respond, lower the frequency. Constant mailings to inactive subscribers hurt your domain reputation and the deliverability of all your emails.

Legal limits

For marketing emails to customers in Spain, Article 21 of the LSSI applies: without consent you can only advertise your own products similar to what the customer bought, and every email must offer a way to opt out. A replenishment reminder for the same product fits within that. A mailing about completely different categories is a question of consent.

Metrics

  • Repeat purchase rate at 90 and 180 days.
  • Average time between the first and second order.
  • Revenue per customer over 12 months (a simple LTV).
  • Share of revenue from repeat orders.
  • Unsubscribes and spam complaints for each type of email.

Example for a coffee store

A customer ordered a 1 kg bag of beans. On the thank-you page they see a coupon for their next order, valid for 45 days. A day after delivery they get an email on how to store the beans and pick a grind. If your data says customers usually reorder after a month, a reminder with a "Reorder" button goes out after about 25 days.

If the customer hasn't come back, two months later they get one email about new varieties. After that the emails become less frequent. You can set up this sequence in any email marketing tool that connects to WooCommerce.

What you can do in a week

  • Calculate the repeat rate for the last six months.
  • Add a time-limited coupon for the next order to the thank-you page and the order confirmation email.
  • Find three products with a replenishment cycle and measure the typical gap between orders.
  • Set up one reminder email for those products.
  • Send a post-delivery email asking "is everything OK?" with your support contacts.

The role of reviews and support

A customer whose problem was solved quickly often comes back more willingly than one who never had a problem. Reply to requests the same day, resolve the issue without extra conditions and afterwards ask whether everything is OK. This is cheaper than any loyalty program.

When the product rarely gets repurchased

People buy a mattress, a sofa or a fridge once every few years. Here it makes more sense to earn from each order: services, accessories, partner gifts after payment. For example, with ThanklyClub the store receives a share of the payouts from partners whose offers the customer sees on the thank-you page and in the email.

FAQ

How do I increase repeat sales in an online store?

Make the first order flawless, give a reason to return on the thank-you page, send replenishment reminders, segment your emails and launch a simple loyalty program.

What repeat purchase rate is good?

It depends on the niche: consumables naturally have a higher rate than furniture. Compare your rate with past periods and watch the trend.

When should I send a repurchase email?

A few days before the typical reorder time for that product. Work out the timing from your own data.

Does a small store need a loyalty program?

Not necessarily. Start with a coupon for the next order and reminders. A loyalty program pays off once you have a noticeable share of regular customers.

How do I win back a customer who hasn't bought in a long time?

Send one or two emails with a specific reason: new items in their category or a personal coupon with an expiry date. If there is no response, send less often so you don't hurt deliverability.
